    Stage 1 Thinking about getting fit
    You may not be ready to begin a fitness program today. But you can start thinking about what getting more exercise could mean for you.

    Stage 2 The benefits of feeling fit
    Maybe you've considered a fitness program and you are just not sure when or how to start. You may want to think more about what it means to get fit, or try some small steps first.

    Stage 3 Preparing to become physically fit
    You feel ready to go beyond considering a fitness program to doing something about it. You've thought about the benefits and pictured yourself being successful. Now it's time to learn and practice the skills that make exercise a habit.

    Stage 4 Feeling good about being fit
    You are making excellent strides toward a lifetime of regular exercise. Applaud your commitment. The longer you are physically active, the more confident you'll be and the less likely you are to slip back.

    Stage 5 Staying fit for good
    You are in control of your exercise habits. Be proud of yourself! Staying with an exercise program is challenging, and you've done it. Now you are ready to commit to being fit for life.

    Although it seems like you will move from one stage to the next in a straight line, that's not necessarily so. Expect to go up and down between stages while working towards permanent change
